The Essay in Poetry – Saturday 3 April, 1–4pm (UK)
The essay, one of the most versatile literary forms, has long managed to find its way into poetry. From the prose poetry of Arthur Rimbaud and the discursive and sequenced writing of William Carlos Williams, to current writers such as Anne Carson, Will Harris, Mary Ruefle, Kathleen Graber and Jenny Xie, we will ask what aspects inherited from the essay enhance the experience of a poem.
Anthony Anaxagorou will examine the ways poets have incorporated the essay’s elasticity, rhetorical poise and manner of searching into their poems. The workshop will look at what needs to be in place for the poem to move in and out of traditional essayistic modes, as well as considering the subtextual elements that endow the poem with surprise, gravitas and depth.
